Quartz

Quartz (ˈkwȯrts )- SiO2

Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust. Actually, it’s the second most abundant (remember Feldspar wins top spot here). It consists of Silica, or Silicon Dioxide and can generally be found in one of two basic forms. These are macrocrystalline (Quartz) and micro-or cryptocrystalline (Chalcedony). It has a Vitreous luster, a hardness of 7 and is in the Trigonal crystal system. There are no particular rules for naming or defining Quartz. This means that among it’s NO LESS THAN 107 varieties, you will find names that refer to shape, color, or just the general whim of the discoverer.
